Unbelievably, it’s 25 years since John and Christine opened the doors of Gilpin to the public for the very first time! So to mark this special year for us we are running a fabulous competition via our Facebook Page.

The first stages you will find here, with 25 prizes for 25 couples to stay at the hotel, and subsequently the chance to win a night’s exclusive use of the Lake House for 12 of your family and friends. As the competition progresses we really want to get to the heart of why relationships work (or don’t!), as relationships are the core stone of everything we do at Gilpin – relationships between the team, between the team and guests, guests’ relationships with each other… without people we are nothing! We hope it will be fun and you enjoy taking part. The competition is open to anyone that has made it past 10 years in a relationship…

Zoë 'Chief Chatterer' Cunliffe joined in 2001 with husband Barney. After years of working through the departments as a sort of family apprentice, Zoë’s chief talents have finally been rewarded with a role that encompasses her métiers - talking and writing! You will now mostly find her harassing guests in reception and the restaurants, and writing/editing Gilpin Life. Jasper Gerrard of the Telegraph wrote that Gilpin was "friendly informality, personified by Zoë Cunliffe and her smile that speaks of crumpets by the fire and earthy humour."

I’m afraid you’ll have to live with numb / blue fingers for just a little while longer – I posted the following on facebook yesterday :

We’ve had such an incredible response to 25th Anniversary Competition – thank you so much, it’s a real privilege to do this. So many of you have included such lovely detail – some very emotional, I’m going through boxes of tissues! The only thing is it means we’re not quite ready to announce the remaining 24 couples so I’m posting here to ask you to give us another couple of days when we will start announcing the couples. We only gave ourselves a short time between closing the competition and announcing the winners, and in retrospect it just wasn’t enough time to give all the entries proper consideration, which considering the amount of effort you’ve all put it, just wouldn’t be fair. So now I’m off back to my lovely entries, good luck everyone and thank you.
